WHAT IS THE 'WAND OF OFFICE' THAT WAS BROKEN AT THE QUEEN’S FUNERAL?
One of the stranger moments of the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II is a final
ceremonial act known as the “breaking of the wand” which is then buried
with the late monarch. It is an event that has not taken place since her
father, KING GEORGE VI, was buried in 1952, and which has never been widely
seen by the public before. LORD PARKER, the lord chamberlain, completes
this symbolic ceremony in which he breaks his wand of office. Known as the
'breaking of the stick', this part of the funeral marks the end of the lord
chamberlain's term in service of QUEEN ELIZABETH II. His is the most senior
position in the royal household and he is responsible for organising events
such as weddings, funerals and state visits for the monarch; he has held
